Coming Up With Great Dissertation Topics: Step-By-Step Instructions

You don’t have to be wildly creative to come up with a great dissertation topic. There is actually a science to this process that can be easily explained in five simply steps. Follow this process and see what kind of a topic you come up with.

  • Step 1: Decide on your argument

    • The first thing to do is to write down what your argument will be. This proposition will be the backbone of your dissertation topic and will influence the nature of the wording. However, don’t be tempted to write down the actual topic yet, as there are some other steps to complete first.

  • Step 2: Determine the main subject

    • Whether you are discussing a character, a location or an action; every topic has a main subject. This needs to be determined early on and you will have to adhere to certain criteria. The subject must be interesting, flexible and pertinent to the other steps mentioned below.

  • Step 3: Choose a direction

    • Your subject will end up going in any direction you take it. Be sure to understand what this direction will be and to include a reference to it in your topic. For example, if your main subject is to be Oxford University, determine what the supporting factor to that subject will be. Will you explain how the university has a rich history, or will you describe an incident that happened there? Determining the direction will help you form most of your topic sentence.

  • Step 4: Word your topic in a catchy way

    • How would you structure the words to your topic to make it enticing? If you read it, would you pick it up? Rearrange the words until you find the perfect formula. Create a bit of mystery and have the reader feel as if they will gain something by reading it.

  • Step 5: Make sure you have enough to say

    • In order to refine your topic one final time, take a quick mental peek at your potential research. Is there enough to say about the topic you have created? If not, be sure to include some more insight into what you will be discussing.

Now that you have the perfect dissertation topic, be sure to do it justice by writing a great paper. Go through all the points one more time before you start and check off each one to make sure your topic is interesting and original.
